They are not here yet, but they are coming. Bison are one of two ecologically important species who once roamed this area known as Glaciernationalpark, that are no longer present (Caribou are the other). However in collaboration with the Blackfeet Tribe, Parks Canada, private landowners in US/Canada, and NPS units throughout the country, Glacier National Park seeks to restore wild bison to the Chief Mountain area of the park. This could be an exciting project to follow.

Making our way up through the National Parks in the spring looking for bison and finding a whole lot more. The Tetons bison weren’t reachable this time around (behind a few road closures), but their ecological friends were in abundance.

Did you know bison once roamed nearly the entire North American Continent? The bison that once roamed the Rocky Mountain region were distinctly different when explorers wrote about them. Rumor has it, “Mountain Bison” were technically a cross between Woods Bison and Plains Bison.
Since bison are a keystone species who have impacted numerous other species, as we travel from park to park, ranch to ranch, filming the story of bison we often take a few moments to collect some b-roll from areas where bison once roamed. Our goal is to have very little stock footage and as much original footage as possible to be used in the film.

“We prayed for rain, we got it, but it came at a high price” said Shawn Bennett of Prairie Ridge Buffalo Ranch after discovering a favorite bison cow had been struck by lightening.
Located in Limon, CO Prairie Ridge Buffalo Ranch, owned by the Thieman and Bennett family, provides Harvest Hosts guests with a glimpse into the realities of ranching. Guests have access to incredible amenities that go above and beyond expectations, while experiencing real life on a bison ranch.
It was an incredible opportunity for us to film on Prairie Ridge! Although we are sorry for the loss from a strike of lightening, we are grateful to have been able to capture the the hardships and rewards of raising bison with the Thieman and Bennett family.

Big Basin Prairie Preserve Wildlife Area. The Big Basin Prairie Preserve is 1,818 acres of native mixed grass prairie managed by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. This area is in the Red Hills region of Kansas. Dick Gehring runs a herd of bison on Big Basin as part of the native species grazing program. What a great example of private ranchers working with State Parks to maintain our public lands.
